Was it just me, that thought that the Roadrunner from Looney Tunes animations, was an asshole?
This was something that I discussed with my friend, because she didn’t see it the same way growing up.
To me the hero of the story is Wile E. He fails constantly, gets himself in situations he doesn’t know how to cope with. Gets physically hurt, has to recuperate, basically he is the underdog that never, ever gives up. An iron clad resolve, and a determination to succeed.
He buys stuff to help him, clearly online, as most of it either doesn’t work or wasn’t as described. If it doesn’t work he bins it and tries again later (I got so fed up with companies trying to put you off returning things, if defective, so I learned to do the same). He literally takes everything on himself and sees it as a personal failing when things don’t go to plan.
So back to Roadrunner, he was an absolute git. He knew he could get away, knew he was fast enough. Would stop and bait Wile E, then leave him to get hurt while he ran away. It was like someone driving off in a car just as you’re about to open the car door. He was a dick, if you ask me. Especially if you look at motivation, Wile E just wanted to eat, granted a takeaway would have probably been a better option than ACME products. However, that was his goal, to sustain himself. He put everything he had into that goal and at the end of each episode, he remains starving.
Wile E Coyote isn’t the bad guy, but a determined, persistent, and starving underdog. He is strength of will and resolve personified.
