Throwback post 3rd December 2021
I want to keep things positive and talk about my favourite experience ever. When I was a child (aged about 6 or 7) on holiday with my family, we visited the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam.
I have always found art to be fascinating, since a very young age. I just really love that humans have been creating artwork since the upper palaeolithic era, between 14,000 and 40,000 years ago. Yet humanity is producing artwork that is different and unique, not just now, but all of this time. Is that not fantastic, does that not show how different we are all; how our minds are our own canvas with our individual and unique image that covers it?
It just happened when we were there it was the only time the entire collection was in one place. Every single piece of art by Vincent Van Gogh that could be brought together was together in one building. It was such an incredibly beautiful experience for me knowing I was surrounded by virtually his entire life’s work all in one place. I remember looking at some of his paintings and thinking he often had a dark life but he created such beauty and that made his life eternal.
However, imagine for a moment what he could have created if he’d been happy. Each floor was basically a path around the walls of the room. With the middle of the floor removed so you could see to the bottom. I stood at the top in complete and consuming amazement. Just slowly walking round looking at them all together. I struggled a lot as a child, but that, wow..., I will always love that day.
All my best and love
