Imagine that an autistic character was created over 100 years ago. That character would probably have stood out so much.
A character created with heightened senses; a very keen sense of observation; an instinctual need for knowledge and a continual natural curiosity. The character would also need someone that translates society and the grey areas as well as being a social buffer to defuse misunderstandings or the perception of rudeness. Difficulty sleeping would be an issue and unsolved problems would get to him. An answer would become a driving focus for him. He would probably even have a job which fit the way his mind worked. That would stand out wouldn’t it, stand the test of time...?
He might even live in London and be known for wearing a deerstalker. You never know ...
This is my view, just a theory, but to me there a lot of aspects to the character of Sherlock Holmes that fit to make that assumption.
