Sheldon's Spot and Knocking
I talked about mental rules a while back. I am going to focus on two of Sheldon’s. The first is the spot where he feels comfortable. It was chosen for a number of reasons. “In the winter that seat is close enough to the radiator to remain warm, and yet not so close as to cause perspiration. In the summer it’s directly in the path of a cross breeze created by open windows there, and there. It faces the television at an angle that is neither direct, thus discouraging conversation, nor so far wide to create a parallax distortion. It faces the television at a direct angle allowing me to immerse myself in entertainment or game play without being subject to conversation". So there are a lot of considerations behind his rule. It would be comforting to know that his spot fits all his personal requirements. The second rule I will talk about is his knocking (it’s actually 9 knocks not 3, because it’s 3 knocks consisting of 3 knocks). He does it constantly in The Big Bang Theory but you might have noticed not in Young Sheldon. That’s because the event that created the rule hasn’t happened yet. In a later Big Bang Theory episode he explains why it started. He walked in on his dad cheating on his mum, didn’t say anything and left. That’s when that particular rule came into effect. He says “the first knock is traditional but two and three are for people to get their pants (trousers) on”. It will be interesting to see how it plays out, how realistic it is. I can’t say for certain but I do get the feeling that that moment will either be in this current (most likely) or next season.
