I have a challenge for you today. Sticking with the theme of media, pick 10 films or TV shows. They have to revolve around a school in some way (include a mix of entertainment aimed at different ages). Skip through and my bet is every one will have this dynamic. The cool kids are always the ones that don’t care and push others around. Kids will usually be picked on by a group, not one on one. They are normally older children picking on younger ones. And it will be relentless, a continuous attack over a period of time. Essentially the media helps creates a view of our world, the view we give to children and the next generations. Why is this dynamic constantly created in media and never changed? How is it possible to change the dynamic in schools, put and end to bullying once and for all if that’s all we teach kids? Be the aggressor, that’s what the cool kids do: it’s being re-enforced every time they watch something on TV or a tablet. I only had TV, I predate the internet age. However I saw even back then that I was always going to be the target. The one that was going to be singled out, because the shows and films told me so. And as it often does, art and life bore a striking similarity. I think we need to start to change media and instead send the message the cool kids are the ones that are being themselves.
