My daughter asked me a few years ago, very directly, was Santa real?
I try always to be honest with her, but also frame things in a way she can understand. I will admit this was a tricky one for me. Mainly because I didn’t want her to lose that Christmas spirit. So this is what I told her... In this world a thought, an idea can crossover. It can manifest in the real world. Like visiting Mickey Mouse in Disneyland, or searching for Pokémon using an app.
That there are some ideas, and beliefs, fuelled by the people that believe in it, this can create a version in the real world. So Santa isn’t a person like we are, but a collective belief in a kindness and compassion, that many people hold dear.
I watched the following year to see if my words had taken away some of her holiday spirit, but it didn’t. She still loves the season, gets into the holiday spirit ... and tells me off if I don’t move the elves. Unlike some homes , our elves are mischievous and like to have fun before Christmas.
I did make one mistake when the elves went on strike because they didn’t get Christmas presents. Guess who had to get the elves a present that year...
All our best and love
