Pride

I was always looking for love, maybe that’s the difference between someone that’s heterosexual and someone who is demisexual. Personally I felt like I hit the jackpot when I met my wife.

I didn’t understand flirting and felt like I was terrible at dating. In fact I felt like I was pretty awful at relationships in general. However things felt different with Jennie. This year we will have been together 17 years (in September) and married for 15 years (in October).

I only heard the term “Demisexual” for the first time a couple of years ago when talking to an autistic advocate in the States. She was talking about her husband and my exact words were, “Holy shit, that’s me!” All I’d been told about the term is that it meant that a mental connection was needed for attraction, but it felt like it fit me as soon as I’d heard the definition. There was no hesitation or doubt, and it did explained a hell of a lot. The reason for saying this, and for this post, is that it’s the first year that I’m celebrating pride month.

I intend to go to Autistic Pride Aberdeen this Saturday with my family. The event, which has been organised by Aurora Consulting, starts at 11am and runs until 1pm. I can’t say when I will turn up or how long I will be able to stay, as it will depend on the pain levels on Saturday, but I am looking forward to it and am very hopeful that the weather will be good on the day. I will take copies of Kaleidoscope with us, in case anyone is interested in a copy. Personally I am really looking forward to meeting other advocates and autistic people, so I hope we can go.

If we are unable to travel on the day I will put out a post. However, I am most definitely keeping my fingers crossed for this one.

To anyone else in the LGBTQIA+ community: Happy Pride Month! We hope it’s a memorable month for all the right reasons!
