Instictual Response
I just wanted to show everyone what I want to fight for. Autistic people rarely get to just live their lives; I have more control over mine because I try to control my environment, limit the impact of sensory issues and that public places have on us all the time. We don’t all have that option so we need to change the world. The truth is autism isn’t a disability by default but the way this world is can definitely be very disabling to us, especially trying to fit into a neurotypical mould when you think very differently. The latest monthly Assuring Transformation NHS Digital data shows that in October 2021 in total 2,070 autistic people and people with learning disabilities are in inpatient mental health hospitals in England. 1,215 (59%) of these people are autistic as of 18 Nov 2021. I don’t have a control issue but take all control away from me and I really struggle. I only spoke about this for the first time in a reply to one of my posts very recently. When I was 17 I was going to sign myself into a mental facility in Inverness. No one knew. I was asked if I was sure, I responded that I could try and see if it helped. I learned that I could sign myself in but leaving would not be my choice. I decided against it and I’ll admit I’m in tears writing this because I really struggled but part of me is really glad I didn’t do it. Now look at the figures above again, and imagine how many autistic people must be held in institutions across the world...
