Gold Rings

Updated: Dec 6, 2023

By the fifth day of Christmas my true love had given to me ... everything.

Today’s venue, Culloden House Hotel, is a personal one as it is where my wife and I were married. Something my dad helped arrange, as he knew the management from his job as a tour guide and operator.

Given that, I thought today would be the perfect day to share a poem that she inspired.

Communication had been limited for most of our relationship, so I wanted her to know exactly what she meant to me.

Meeting her changed my life and gave me a family that I absolutely adore. My wife and daughter are my world, because I couldn’t imagine it without them.

Have you, seen me?

I was lost a long time ago,

I wandered away,

When I wasn’t looking,

Unfortunately I kept going,

I don’t know where I went,

The one inside,

The real me,

I just kept drifting along in life,

But I desperately searched,

One day I found someone,

They knew I was heartbroken,

But picked me up anyway,

Carrying me on their journey,

We began searching far and wide,

I felt like a body without a spirit,

Another step just unobtainable,

Still held frozen inside and out,

Frightened and astray,

But not alone...

Not anymore,

Misplaced in my head,

Surrounded by a twister of fear and doubt,

A lone but recognisable figure sat,

Beyond lost, huddled in the centre.

It took soft words often spoken,

And a warm open heart,

Compassion and understanding,

A loving hand that kept reaching down,

That’s what it took to get, me back.

Emerging embraced,

Perfectly whole,

Carried no more,

Finally free,

To be who I was meant to be

All our best and love

I met my wife shortly after I had injured my spine. She gave me company and compassion, care and comfort. I fell in love with her so many times over the 16 years we have been together, and I’m often finding new reasons to love her more.
