Collectibles Connection (2)

With this particular collectible you will probably see a devil. However this one is a highly specific reference. I look at this figure and instantly think of Robin Williams. An incredible actor, comedian and person. I remember reading a story about how he would hire people that were homeless on every film he worked on. I think that just speaks to who he was and I think it shows his heart.

My favourite films of his always rotate between Disney’s Aladdin, Dead Poets Society, Mrs Doubtfire, Man of the Year and Good Morning Vietnam. All brilliant films for different reasons, but, all enhanced by the presence and performance delivered by Robin. He had such an exuberant spirit, that was on show in, Mork and Mindy, his movies, and his stand up.

So why a devil, like I said it’s a highly specific reference, from Good Morning Vietnam. I thought the way Adrian Cronauer was portrayed was beautifully honest. He made mistakes in his personal life but he was completely dedicated to lifting the spirits of the troops. His comedy was sharp and witty. He didn’t use comedy or words to attack ... but to make the hard truths, just that little bit easier to live with. To find humour in a place, and time, where it would have been sparse.

Shortly after his introduction and getting on air (if I remember correctly it may have been the first broadcast he does) Adrian pretends to play a record backwards. During this bit he says, "Freddie is the devil... Freddie is the devil". The Funko Mascot is Freddy, to me it just takes me back to watching that movie, many times in my life. On the really bad days and on better ones like watching it with my wife. She hadn’t seen it before but loved it just as much as I did. And it reminds me of all the times Robin kept me company in his career.

Robin died in August of 2014, but he will always be alive in my memories as long as I am breathing. He had a very challenging life at times but he made sure that he brought joy and light into peoples lives.

All our best and love
